Why Is My Vape Leaking? Common Causes and Safe Steps

If liquid appears at the mouthpiece, on the side of the device or around the air openings, it does not always mean the same thing. Sometimes only condensed vapour collects, other times it is a real e-liquid leak. It is worth telling them apart, because the steps differ too.
In this guide we go through the most common causes, what you can safely check and when it is better to set the device aside.
Vapour or a real leak?
During use some of the vapour can cool in the mouthpiece and in the air channel. That can leave small droplets, especially after intensive use. If only a few droplets appear around the mouthpiece, it is often condensation.
A real leak is more likely when e-liquid repeatedly appears on the side of the device, at the airflow opening or at other joints, and when the amount of liquid visibly drops within a short time.
Why can a vape leak?
1. Unsuitable storage position
If you store the device upside down for long periods, strongly tilted or in a warm place, the liquid can shift more easily in the internal system. With disposable vapes it is worth keeping the device upright or stable, especially for longer storage.
2. Warm environment
High temperatures can change the viscosity of the e-liquid, so leaks appear more easily in a hot car, next to a radiator or in direct sun. Do not leave the device in a hot place for long.
3. Strong or too frequent puffs
Strong puffs one after another can change the internal flow of liquid and air. If you notice spitting, gurgling or a wet mouthpiece, take a short break and then try more even use.
We cover the differences between inhalation styles in more detail in the DTL and MTL guide.
4. Airflow that is too tight or unsuitable
On devices with adjustable airflow, the airflow affects how much air enters the system during use. If you notice spitting or overly wet vapour, change the setting in small steps.
You can also read about how airflow works in the guide on adjusting vape airflow.
5. Condensation collected in the mouthpiece
Vapour collected in the mouthpiece can flow back over time or appear as small droplets. The outer surface of the device can be carefully wiped with a soft, dry cloth. Do not take a disposable vape apart to clean it inside.
6. Damaged or worn device
If the device has been dropped, has cracked or deformed, or the liquid keeps reappearing, it may no longer be simple condensation. In that case do not try to take it apart or repair it yourself.
What to do if you see liquid on the device?
- Wipe the outer surface of the device dry.
- Set it in a stable, preferably upright position.
- Let it rest for a short while.
- Check whether the liquid reappears.
- If the airflow is adjustable, change it only in small steps.
- Use shorter, more even puffs.
- If the leak is continuous or heavy, do not keep forcing use.
When should you stop using it?
If e-liquid reaches the charging connector, or the device is unusually hot, damaged, deformed, leaking heavily or its behaviour becomes unpredictable, do not charge it and do not use it until the situation is clarified.
If the problem appears during charging, it is also worth reading the guide on safe USB-C charging of a vape.
Can leaking be connected to a burnt taste?
The two phenomena are not the same, but they can appear alongside each other on the same device. Leaking may suggest the liquid is not moving where it should, while a burnt taste is often linked to insufficient e-liquid supply around the atomiser or to overly intensive use.
You can read about the causes of burnt taste in a separate article: Why does my vape taste burnt?
When is it worth choosing another device?
If the leak keeps coming back, the device is damaged or use is no longer reliable, on disposable models it is usually not worth attempting a home repair.
You will find the current range in the VapePurchase webshop. On product pages it is worth checking the display, the airflow solution, the charging option and the build of the device. For example, the pages of the QQ Bang Shisha 200K, Airmez Fox 2 in 1 80000 or Merry Mi Mecha Pro 35000 show the details of that model.
What not to do
- Do not take the disposable vape apart.
- Do not try to seal, glue or modify it yourself.
- Do not charge a device whose charging connector is wet.
- Do not keep using it if it is damaged or unusually hot.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to have a few droplets on the mouthpiece?
After intensive use a small amount of condensation can appear. Wipe the outer surface dry and watch whether the liquid reappears.
Why does the vape gurgle or spit?
It often indicates that too much liquid or condensation has got close to the air channel. Take a short break and then try more even use.
Can adjusting the airflow help?
On the VapePurchase FAQ page you will find more practical answers about usage, ordering and delivery.
Can I keep using it if there is liquid around the charging connector?
Do not charge the device while the connector is wet or the cause of the leak is unclear. If the liquid reappears, it is better not to use it further.
