DTL or MTL Vape? How the Two Inhalation Styles Differ

When browsing vape devices you will often come across the abbreviations DTL and MTL. The two terms do not indicate a brand or a quality category, but how inhalation happens, how open the airflow is and what character the vapour from the device has.

In short: MTL (Mouth-to-Lung) means a tighter, more restrained draw feel, while DTL (Direct-to-Lung) involves airier inhalation and usually a larger amount of vapour. Some modern devices can switch between the two modes.

DTL vs MTL: the most important differences in one place

What is an MTL vape?

MTL is short for Mouth-to-Lung. With this method the user first draws the vapour into the mouth and then inhales it from there. The draw is usually firmer and the air path narrower.

In MTL mode the goal is not for the device to produce the largest possible cloud of vapour. A more controlled, calmer draw character is typical instead. That is why a vape set to MTL can feel completely different from a more open mode of the same device.

What is a DTL vape?

DTL is short for Direct-to-Lung. Here the inhalation is more direct: the user draws the vapour with a more open airflow and a larger volume of air.

DTL mode usually gives an airier draw feel and a larger amount of vapour. This is especially common with shisha or hookah-style devices, whose construction is designed from the outset for more open inhalation and more spectacular vapour production.

Airflow changes the vaping feel a lot

One of the most easily noticeable differences between DTL and MTL is airflow. With tighter airflow the draw is firmer, with more open airflow more air passes through the device.

Coil technology matters too

Besides the inhalation style, the design of the heating element also affects how a device performs. A mesh coil uses a larger heating surface, and Dual Mesh or Triple Mesh systems may use several mesh heating elements.

This does not mean, however, that every Dual Mesh is automatically DTL or that every higher-resistance coil is automatically MTL. The complete device construction, the airflow and the factory settings together determine the mode of use.

Can a vape be DTL and MTL at the same time?

Yes, if the device was designed from the outset to allow switching between the two modes. In that case the user can choose a firmer or airier draw character on the same device.

One example in the VapePurchase range is the QQ Bang Shisha 200K DTL/MTL vape. According to the current product data, the device offers a selectable DTL/MTL mode, a 0.4 Ω Triple Mesh Coil system, an LCD display, a rechargeable 650 mAh battery and Type-C charging.

This is a good example of why it is worth looking beyond the puff count: between two high-capacity vapes, the inhalation mode, coil, airflow and ease of handling can make a significant difference.

DTL or MTL: which is worth choosing?

There is no single right choice for everyone. It is more useful to look at what draw character you are after.

  • MTL may be more interesting if you like the firmer draw with less air.
  • DTL may be more interesting if you prefer airier inhalation and a larger vapour volume.
  • The DTL/MTL dual mode can be practical if you want to try both different characters on the same device.

In the VapePurchase vape range it is worth checking the technical data on the product pages to see which inhalation mode, coil system and airflow the specific model supports.

Common mistakes in understanding DTL and MTL

1. Not every device supports both modes

If a product page lists only one mode of use, it is not worth assuming the device is also suitable for the other mode. The manufacturer and product page specifications are authoritative.

2. Airflow alone does not make a device DTL or MTL

Adjustable airflow can change the draw feel a lot, but the coil, the internal air channel and the complete device construction also matter.

3. The nominal puff count is not the same in every mode

On a high-capacity device the puff count actually achievable can be affected by the length and frequency of draws and by the operating mode. That is why a puff or draw value stated as “up to” should be treated as a nominal capacity.

DTL vs MTL – brief summary

MTL: tighter airflow, firmer draw, the vapour first enters the mouth.

DTL: more open airflow, airier inhalation, typically a larger vapour volume.

DTL/MTL device: a model the manufacturer designed for both draw characters.

Frequently asked questions

What does DTL mean?

DTL is short for Direct-to-Lung. An airier, more direct inhalation style that typically involves a larger vapour volume.

What does MTL mean?

MTL is short for Mouth-to-Lung. The vapour first enters the mouth and from there the inhalation happens. The draw is usually firmer.

What is the main difference between DTL and MTL?

The biggest difference is in the inhalation method and the character of the airflow. MTL is tighter, DTL is typically more open and airier.

Can every vape with adjustable airflow do DTL and MTL?

No. Adjustable airflow alone does not mean the device was designed for both modes. Always check the specification of the specific model.

Is there a high-capacity vape that offers DTL and MTL mode?

Yes. In the current VapePurchase range, the QQ Bang Shisha 200K is a model whose product data lists a selectable DTL/MTL mode.
