Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt? Causes and Fixes

A burnt, dry or scratchy taste is the most common complaint about any vape, and it almost always means the same thing: the wick around the coil is not getting enough e-liquid, or the device has reached the end of its working life. It is not worth ignoring. Carrying on is unpleasant, and it can leave you with a device that never tastes right again.
This guide explains what a dry hit is, which habits cause it, what to do in the first minute, what to avoid, and how to tell when a device is genuinely finished.
The short version
- Puffs taken back to back can cause a temporary dry taste.
- Long puffs and tight airflow build more heat around the coil.
- If the e-liquid has run out or the wick is permanently scorched, resting the device will not fix it.
- Do not open the housing, do not pour e-liquid into it, and do not keep vaping a device that tastes strongly burnt.
What is a dry hit?
The coil heats the e-liquid that the wick has absorbed. When the wick is not wet enough, that heat has no liquid to turn into vapour, so the taste turns dry, bitter or burnt. Mesh and dual mesh coils spread the heat more evenly, but they still need a steady supply of e-liquid to work with.
The most common causes
Vaping too intensively
If there is no pause between puffs, the wick has no time to draw fresh e-liquid towards the coil. Put the device down for 5–10 minutes and then test it with a single short puff.
Puffs that are too long
A long puff produces more heat and uses e-liquid faster. The device’s protection may even cut the power during an unusually long draw, which often shows up afterwards as a flash of the indicator light.
E-liquid running low
A weakening flavour and thinning vapour usually come before the burnt taste, so treat them as an early warning. If the liquid indicator is close to empty, do not try to stretch the device with extra charging, because charging cannot put e-liquid back into the reservoir.
Airflow too tight
With adjustable airflow, a very tight setting gives a warmer, more concentrated draw and less cooling air across the coil. Open it slightly and take shorter puffs. Our guide to adjusting vape airflow shows how to do that in small steps.
Wrong storage
A hot car, direct sunlight and very cold conditions all change how the e-liquid behaves and make leaking more likely. Store the device dry, at room temperature and preferably upright, and keep it out of a glovebox or a windowsill.
What to do at the first burnt taste
- Stop vaping immediately.
- Stand the device upright and wait 5–10 minutes.
- Check the e-liquid and battery indicators.
- If the airflow is adjustable, open it slightly.
- Test with one short puff only.
If the taste is clean again, the cause was almost certainly a temporary e-liquid supply problem and the device is fine. If it is still burnt or acrid, stop using it.
What not to do
- Do not shake the device or tap it against your hand to move the liquid around.
- Do not pour e-liquid into the mouthpiece or into the air inlet.
- Do not take the sealed housing apart.
- Do not keep charging just because the taste is burnt. Charging does not replace e-liquid and does not repair a scorched coil.
- Do not use a device that is leaking, swollen or unusually warm.
How to prevent it
Prevention is mostly about giving the wick time to recover between puffs. The habits below make the biggest difference, and none of them costs you anything.
| Habit | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| A short pause between puffs | Gives the wick time to soak up fresh e-liquid |
| Moderate puff length | Keeps the coil from overheating |
| A sensible airflow setting | Helps control the temperature of the vapour |
| Upright, cool storage | Reduces the chance of leaking and of the e-liquid separating |
On multi-flavour devices, a few short and gentle puffs after you switch chambers help the new one settle. Devices in the Airmez Vape collection are the multi-chamber type, so this matters more with them than with a single-flavour disposable.
When the device is finished
Some devices do not recover. If the vapour stays weak, the liquid indicator is empty, the taste remains burnt, or the device will not work properly even after charging, it has reached the end of its life. At that point more charging and more resting only waste your time. If you are not sure which of those it is, work through our guide to troubleshooting a disposable vape that is not working first.
Then dispose of it as e-waste rather than putting it in general household rubbish. Take it to your local household waste recycling centre, a WEEE take-back point or a retailer that runs a take-back scheme. Our guide to disposing of and recycling a disposable vape walks through the options. Never put a swollen or leaking battery in a bin.
Frequently asked questions
Will the burnt taste go away if I let the device rest?
With a temporary dry hit, yes. If the wick is permanently scorched or the e-liquid has run out, resting it will not bring the taste back to normal.
Does charging help a burnt-tasting vape?
Only if a low battery was the whole problem. Charging cannot replace e-liquid or repair a damaged coil, and our guide to charging a vape with USB-C safely covers the battery side properly if that is what you are dealing with.
Can I keep using a device that tastes slightly burnt?
It is not recommended. Stop, let it rest, then test once. If the taste does not return to normal, stop using it for good.
