Why Is My Vape Leaking? Causes and What to Do

When liquid appears around the mouthpiece, on the side of the device or near the airflow inlet, it does not always mean the same thing. Sometimes it is only condensed vapour that has collected in the airway, and sometimes it is a genuine e-liquid leak. The two are worth telling apart, because what you should do about them is different.
This guide goes through the most common causes, what you can safely check for yourself, and when it is time to set the device aside instead of persevering with it.
Condensation or a real leak? How to tell the difference
During use, some of the vapour cools inside the mouthpiece and the airway. That leaves small droplets behind, especially after heavy or repeated use. If you find a few drops around the mouthpiece and nowhere else, it is very often condensation rather than a fault.
A real leak looks different. Suspect genuine leaking when:
- e-liquid repeatedly appears on the side of the device, at the airflow inlet or at other joints,
- the liquid level visibly drops in a short time without you using the device more than usual,
- the outside of the device stays wet or sticky after you have wiped it dry,
- you hear gurgling or get liquid in your mouth on every puff.
Condensation is a normal by-product of vaping and is dealt with by wiping and resting the device. A leak is a sign that liquid is moving where it should not, and it needs a closer look at how you are storing and using the device.
Why a vape leaks: the six common causes
1. The wrong storage position
If a device is kept upside down, at a steep angle or lying loose in a pocket or bag for a long time, the liquid inside can shift towards the airway. A disposable vape is best kept upright or at least stable and still, particularly when it is stored rather than used.
2. A hot environment
High temperatures change the thickness of e-liquid, so a device left in a hot car, next to a radiator or in direct sun is more likely to leak. Do not store a vape somewhere that gets properly hot, and give a device that has been in the sun time to settle before you use it again.
3. Hard or too-frequent puffs
Long, hard puffs taken one after another change the flow of liquid and air inside the device. If you notice spitting, a gurgling sound or a wet mouthpiece during a session like that, take a short break and come back to it with a steadier rhythm.
4. Airflow set too tight or set wrongly
On a device with adjustable airflow, the setting affects how much air moves through the system while you draw. If the draw feels too tight or the vapour arrives wet, adjust the airflow in small steps rather than turning it straight from one extreme to the other. Our guide to vape airflow settings explains how the inlet changes the draw, and our comparison of DTL and MTL inhalation covers the difference the mode itself makes.
5. Condensation collected in the mouthpiece
Vapour that has gathered in the mouthpiece can run back or appear as small droplets over time. Wiping the outside of the device carefully with a soft, dry cloth is fine and usually solves it. Never take a sealed disposable apart to clean the inside.
6. A damaged or worn device
If the vape has been dropped, cracked or deformed, or if liquid keeps coming back no matter what you do, condensation is no longer a likely explanation. Do not try to open or repair it at home.
What to do when you see liquid on the device
Work through these steps in order, and stop as soon as the problem is clearly not just condensation:
- Wipe the outside of the device dry.
- Stand it in a stable position, upright if you can.
- Let it rest for a short while.
- Check whether liquid appears again.
- If the airflow is adjustable, change it in small steps only.
- Use shorter, more even puffs.
- If the leak is continuous or heavy, stop forcing it and put the device aside.
When to stop using the device
Put the device down and do not charge it if any of the following applies:
- e-liquid has reached the charging connector,
- the device is unusually warm,
- the housing is damaged or deformed,
- it leaks heavily, or
- its behaviour has become unpredictable, for example firing when it should not.
Never charge a device whose charging connector is wet. Liquid and a live charging connection do not belong together, and the port needs to be dry and undamaged before anything is plugged in. If the problem started during charging, unplug it first and leave it alone until you know what caused it.
Is leaking connected to a burnt taste?
They are not the same problem, but they can appear on the same device at the same time. Leaking suggests that liquid is moving where it should not be, while a burnt taste is usually about poor liquid supply around the coil or use that is too intense for the device. A dry wick and a flooded airway can even alternate on one vape, which is confusing but not unusual.
If the taste has gone burnt, stop puffing and let the device rest before you decide what to do next. We cover the causes separately in our article on why a vape tastes burnt.
When to choose a different device
If a leak keeps coming back, if the device is damaged, or if using it no longer feels reliable, home repair is not the answer on a disposable model. Repeated leaking usually means the device has reached the end of its useful life, or that its design simply does not suit the way you vape: the airflow, the mouthpiece and the way you draw all play a part.
Before you order a replacement, look at four things on the product page: the display and what it reports, the airflow design, the charging options, and the overall build. Those details tell you far more about day-to-day behaviour than the puff number on its own.
What to check on a product page before you buy
A few models in our range show what those details look like in practice. The QQ Bang Shisha 200K appears in our Bang Vape collection, the Airmez Fox 2 in 1 80000 in the Airmez Vape range, and the Merry Mi Mecha Pro 35000 in our Merry Mi Vape collection. Each product page sets out that model’s own display, airflow design, charging options and build, which is the information worth comparing when leaking has become a habit rather than an accident.
More models are listed in the full vape range.
What not to do with a leaking vape
- Do not take a sealed disposable vape apart, not even to clean it.
- Do not try to seal, glue or modify the housing yourself.
- Do not charge a device whose charging connector is wet.
- Do not keep using a device that is damaged or unusually hot.
Never ignore a battery that is swollen, hissing or hot. Keep it away from anything flammable, do not put it in a bag of other devices, and do not try to charge it. When the device is finished, hand it in whole at a WEEE or small-appliance take-back point rather than putting it in household rubbish; our guide to disposing of a used disposable vape explains where it can go.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to find a few drops around the mouthpiece?
After intensive use, a small amount of condensation is normal. Wipe the outside dry, then watch whether the liquid comes back. If it does, treat it as a leak rather than condensation.
Why does my vape gurgle or spit?
It usually means there is too much liquid or condensation near the airway. Take a short break, then try shorter, more even puffs and check whether the airflow setting suits the way you draw.
Can adjusting the airflow help?
On a device with adjustable airflow, a small change can rebalance the draw. Change it in small steps and give each setting a few puffs before you decide.
Can I keep using the device if there is liquid around the charging connector?
Do not charge it, and do not use it, until the connector is dry and you know why the liquid appeared. If it comes back, stop using the device.
Where can I find more help?
Our FAQ page has more practical answers about using, ordering and shipping, and you can always message us with the model name and a description of what you are seeing.
Need a hand with a leaking vape?
Tell us the model, how long you have had it, where the liquid appears and whether the device has been dropped or left somewhere warm. That is usually enough for us to say whether it is condensation, storage or a device that needs replacing.
